In terms of tourism, Sustainability is indeed a more intriguing and safest option. Particularly during this time of climate change, people prefer to stay in or out at night rather than go out in the sun. As a matter of fact, 67% of travellers feel sustainable practices have inspired them to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. (Booking.com, based on a survey conducted to 30,000+ respondents over 33 countries.)
However, while it is good, there are still people who don’t think it’s necessary to care.
Despite the real effects of climate change that we are experiencing every second of the day, 25% of travellers think it is not as severe as people make it out to be. 33% think that the damage has already been done and there is no point in trying to fix it. That being said, they feel it’s pointless to be sustainable at all when the destination itself does not prioritise it.
Therefore, the awareness of being a sustainable tourism destination must be cultivated from within.
Bali, Indonesia’s biggest tourist attraction, which is currently experiencing rapid climate change, should be able to address and handle the issue better. Over 2,000 accommodations in Bali, and most of them don’t know how to bring into practice or how to improve their sustainability efforts.
Their cluelessness will eventually lead to environmental destruction and neglected underprivileged communities. Unfortunately, this is already happening: rising sea levels, extreme heat and drought, beach erosion, floods, water scarcity, and many more. Thus, we need to act fast.
