For hotels and restaurants, mangrove conservation is not just an environmental responsibility but a business opportunity. By supporting mangrove conservation, these businesses can enhance their appeal to eco-conscious travellers and diners who prioritise sustainability. Participating in World’s Mangrove Day can include initiatives like offering eco-friendly menu options that source ingredients sustainably, reducing plastic use, and organising mangrove planting events for guests. These actions not only contribute to environmental preservation but also improve the local tourism experience, promoting a positive image of Bali as a sustainable destination.
Indonesia has more than 20% of the world’s mangrove area, totaling 3.2 million hectares. Mangroves are some of the most important carbon sinks on the planet, absorbing almost ten times as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as terrestrial forests. Therefore, mangroves can significantly reduce climate change by absorbing greenhouse gases and preventing them from entering the atmosphere.
However, due to deforestation, the development of shrimp farms along the coasts, and other forms of aquaculture, it’s estimated that the planet lost at least 35% of all mangrove forests between 1980 and 2000. This drastic reduction in mangrove areas decreases the amount of greenhouse gases absorbed globally, exacerbating climate change. Thus, the conservation of nature is crucial for the health of our planet and humanity.
Today, July 26th, we celebrate one of Earth’s lungs: mangroves. Their existence is vital for our planet, especially for coastal ecosystems. Mangroves act as a protection against storm surges and coastal erosion, ensuring the safety of these ecosystems. Additionally, they are habitats for a diverse range of marine and terrestrial species.
Mangroves also absorb greenhouse gases and sequester carbon, helping to mitigate climate change. Beyond their environmental value, it’s estimated that mangroves contribute about USD $33-58 thousand per hectare annually to the national economies of developing countries, primarily through fisheries and wood. The loss of these species can significantly impact national and global economies.

On July 28th, we observe Nature Conservation Day, which emphasises the importance of preserving our natural resources and biodiversity. Conservation efforts are essential for maintaining the health of ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.
Forests are vital for oxygen production and carbon sequestration, providing habitats for countless species. Wetlands are crucial for water purification, flood control, and as breeding grounds for many aquatic species. Oceans host a vast array of marine life and are essential for regulating the planet’s climate. Protecting endangered species helps maintain biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems.
Conservation is a global endeavour, and here in Bali, we are doing our best to protect and conserve mangroves and nature in general. Eco Tourism Bali is working with many partners located in Bali to transform Bali into a sustainable destination.
Mangroves are a perfect example of how conservation efforts are interconnected. Protecting mangroves supports coastal ecosystems and broader conservation goals. Mangroves are biodiversity hotspots, providing habitats for numerous species while playing a crucial role in climate regulation.
The celebration of World’s Mangrove Day and Nature Conservation Day highlights the critical role these ecosystems play in our planet’s health. By taking action, both individually and collectively, we can protect these invaluable resources and ensure a sustainable future. Let’s celebrate these days not just as annual observances, but as daily commitments to preserving the natural world for ourselves and future generations.
Join the movement to protect our mangroves and natural habitats. Participate in local conservation efforts like our Regenerative Bali Program: Mangrove planting, reduce your carbon footprint, and spread awareness about the importance of nature conservation. Hotels and restaurants can join this initiative by adopting sustainable practices, which not only benefit the environment but also attract guests who value eco-friendly tourism. Together, we can make a significant impact and create a healthier, more sustainable planet.
