80 Years of Indonesia’s Independence: Giving Nature Its Freedom

Every August, the red-and-white flag flies proudly across the archipelago. Streets fill with celebrations, and we remember the sacrifices that gave us Indonesia’s independence. This year feels even more meaningful—80 years of freedom for our nation. But as we stood on a beach in Bali recently, watching waves roll in with bits of plastic tangled in seaweed, we couldn’t help but wonder: Have we truly achieved freedom if our nature is still chained by waste?

Bali’s Hidden Struggle

Bali is often imagined as paradise—endless beaches, lush rice fields, and vibrant traditions. And yes, that beauty is real. But so too is another reality: plastic bottles left behind on the sand, rivers clogged with waste, and landfills growing higher every day. This island, which has always symbolized harmony between humans and nature, is facing a struggle that independence alone hasn’t solved. Our nature is still waiting to be freed.

What Independence Should Mean

At Eco Tourism Bali, we believe that the spirit of Merdeka must extend beyond people—it must also include the environment that sustains us.

For us, true independence means: Oceans free from plastic waste. Forests free from pollution. Future generations free to inherit a clean, thriving island.

That’s why our work focuses on building bridges between tourism and sustainability. Through initiatives like the Eco Climate Badge, we are encouraging hotels and businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices, so that Bali remains a paradise not just in postcards, but in reality.

A Shared Responsibility

As we celebrate 80 years of independence, each of us has a role to play. Freedom isn’t just inherited—it’s protected, nurtured, and passed on.

  • When we choose reusable bags and bottles, we give nature a little more freedom.
  • When we support eco-friendly businesses, we help Bali breathe a little easier.
  • When we join community clean-ups, we stand together in solidarity—not just for our country, but for our planet.

Merdeka for People, Merdeka for Nature

Indonesia’s independence reminds us of what is possible when people unite for a vision of freedom. Today, we are called to expand that vision.

Merdeka untuk manusia, merdeka juga untuk alam.
