Which of these following actions are implemented in your hotel to control and reduce the production of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission from your hotel operations?
Implement energy efficiency measures
Use renewable energy
Implement strategies to reduce and divert waste from landfill
Reduce methane emissions
Increase fuel efficiency in transportation and logistics
From the following system mentioned below, which system do you use to manage and monitor the amount of regular waste being disposed from your operations?
Do you implement any of the following strategies to manage, process, and/or dispose non-diverted solid waste that are generated from your hotel operations?
Segregate non-diverted waste from other waste.
Partnered with waste recycling and collection companies and/or have on-site facility to manage, process, and/or dispose non-diverted waste.
Have you educate your hotel guests and staff to be involved in waste reduction efforts through these following activities?
Provision of information regarding waste reduction practices through promotional media (e.g. brochure, signage, handbook) or verbally (e.g. briefing, reminder).
Provision of opportunities to participate in waste reduction activities (e.g. beach clean-up, workshop).
Provision of opportunities for staff to educate themselves on waste reduction efforts (e.g. training session, short courses).
Which of these following items have you used and purchased for your hotel operations that are made from eco-friendly chemicals and/or natural alternatives?
Eco-friendly chemicals Does not contain or have low fragrance/fragrance-enhancer materials, sensitizers, preservatives, solvents, etc.
Natural alternatives Made from natural/natural-ingredients such as plant-extracted oils, fruits juices, fruit peels, grains, etc.
Refers to gases that trap heat in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide (e.g., produced from fossil fuels), methane (e.g. produced from livestock manure), and water vapour (e.g. produced from wastewater evaporation).
Energy efficiency
Hotel to use less energy to perform the same task or produce the same result by implementing energy-saving strategies and/or installing energy-saving equipment.
Renewable energy
Hotel to source energy that comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished such as sunlight or wind.
Waste reduction and diversion
Hotel to minimize solid waste generation through source reduction, recyclingreuse or composting.
Methane emission reduction
Hotel to minimize methane emission generation through the use of biogas and the reduction of landfill waste.
Fuel efficiency
Hotel to use less fuel to perform the same task or produce the same result by managing transportation use and logistics for hotel operations.
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Eco Friendly Transportation
Defined as any kind of transportation practice or vehicle that does not have (or have less) negative impact on the immediate environment.
Eco Friendly Transportation Information
Any information (e.g. signage, services, opportunities, promotions) initiated and/or conducted by the hotel - individually or in collaboration with other parties
Eco Friendly Transportation Facilities
Any transportation modes provided by the hotel - individually or in collaboration with other parties- and are accessible for hotel guests and staff on-site.

Terms & Definitions
Non-standardized wastewater treatment system
Septic tank that should be impermeable to water/waterproof and has a temporary shelter or treatment of effluents that needs to be disposed of when it is full.
Standardized on-site wastewater treatment system in Indonesia
The system comprises of septic tanks that allow the process of anaerobic digestion to breakdown organic waste matter and completed with a percolation area to fully treat and dispose the effluents.
Sustainable wastewater treatment system
The system is designed to reuse the wastewater generated from the operations. It has efficient methods to purify the wastewater at reduced costs.
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Solid Waste
Consists of organic and inorganic materials which are considered useless and must be managed so as not to harm the environment.
Solid Waste Management System
Refers to the collection, treatment, and disposal of solid waste generated by the hotel either conducted individually by the hotel or in collaboration with other parties (e.g. third-party waste collector agency).
Conventional Solid Waste Management System
Conventional waste management focuses largely on waste collection. The type of treatment are limited such as incineration and disposal to landfills.
Sustainable Solid Waste Management System
Sustainable waste management focuses on reducing waste at its source, recycling, and minimizing the disposal amount.
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Food & Waste
Refers to food that is fit for consumption but consciously discarded at the food preparation phase and/or as leftovers at the consumption phase.
Reduction of food waste
Designing systems and policies related to food preparation to prevent, minimize, or avoid the production of waste in the first place.
Reuse food waste
Recover the value of food that would be wasted through actions such as redeploying overproduced foods and donate it to a food recovery program or charity.
Reduction of food waste
The use of used materials (i.e. food waste) to process it into new products to prevent waste of useful materials such as composting food waste, recycle cooking oil, and many more.
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Non-diverted solid waste
Refers to waste that cannot be diverted from disposal, typically through recycling, but can also through other options such as composting, reusing, or repurposing.
Waste segregation
The process of identifying, classifying, dividing and sorting of waste depending on their biological, physical, and chemical properties.
Waste recycling and collection companies
Refer to external companies that offers alternative solutions or provide consultations to avoid sending the non-diverted waste to landfill.
On-site facility
Refers to hotel’s internal facility that is located on the hotel’s premise to manage, process, and/or dispose non-diverted solid waste.
Zero-waste goal
A goal that targets elimination of all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health..
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Waste reduction
Waste reduction means preventing or decreasing the amount of waste being generated through waste prevention, recycling, or purchasing recycled and environmentally preferable products.
Further explanation of the activities
Provision of information is to increase the awareness of hotel guests and staff on waste reduction practices.
Provision of opportunities to participate is to involve hotel guests and staff in direct efforts to reduce waste throughout their stay in the hotel or even beyond.
Provision of opportunities to educate is to improve the knowledge and skill of hotel staff on waste reduction practices applicable in the hotel operations.

Eco-friendly chemicals (Green Chemistry)
Refers to the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances:
Less toxic to organisms.
Less damaging to ecosystems.
Not persistent or bioaccumulative in organisms or the environment.
Inherently safer to handle and use because they are not flammable
or explosive.
Natural alternatives
Refers to items that are natural and/or made from natural ingredients.
Natural: Found as is in nature directly from plants, minerals, animals or the
microbial world.
Natural ingredient: Chemical compound that is is obtained from plants,
minerals, animals or the microbial world by processes of physical extraction (e.g. pressure), without any transformation of its constituents
Guidelines
Terms & Definitions
Pollution
The introduction of substances or energy into the environment, resulting in deleterious effects of such a nature as to endanger human health, harm living resources and ecosystems, and impair or interfere with amenities and other legitimate uses of the environment.
